Turquoise

There was a turquoise rabbit. Soft. There was a diamond and a claw. There was a child down by the ocean walking along the side of the road. There was a diamond and an ocean and the ocean leaned over and said I have heard the name Barabas… who is he. And the child sat down for awhile alongside the road and opened his magnifying lense and his lunch pale. Along the side of the road, he said, there is a rabbit with a coat of turquoise back there. I shook her hand and said follow me to the ocean today like yesterday? Did she answer? I am a child of about six. I owned the world once. Corporate jets. Dance lessons. Now I am on vacation. Has the rabbit answered yet? Is the rabbit following along. I think I will name him Barabis. Barabis the Rabbit.

There are two bs in Barabbas he heard the cloud kindly say. And there over by the road is a fence of rusted wire. What would you buy the ocean, asked the rabbit.

A kite the boy said. A box kite like your jacket.

And what would you buy the ocean?

I said. I would buy him a box kite.

O’. I meant me the second time asked the rabbit.

You. Lunch.

Now then there is an offering and a tree. The tree opens its branches to its own power and rises along the edge of the hilltop. And what would you buy me?

The wind.
