West 7th St

A guitar and a piano sat alone. There was

a singer’s voice down the hallway and

a man sitting at a desk in an office.

The Church was serving a Wednesday night meal.

Two kids had wondered in a little late for the sixties.

1974 and they had a car they had been given in Little Rock

and were headed out to California and the ocean

to stay with his Great Aunt. A Wednesday night meal

and singing. The man at the desk was arranging a family to stay with

and a temporary job for the thirteen-year-old

and the fifteen-year-old and classes at the school.

All they had had to say was they were traveling out

to their aunt in California and the Church would call her

and then arrange help. The kids would never ask for cash

just a temp job and a family to stay with.

Both of them had been studying for black belts

at the Y and to them the world was a

beautiful adventure.
