Jane Mansfield

We lived in Picayune, Mississippi, on the Saturn first stage

for Apollo One. My father explained to me that the Mississippi

Tourist Office was a surveillance front for the state government

and that local citizens were encouraged at the time, 1966,

to stop by the Sheriff’s Office to get Northern license plates

if they were going to travel north out of state.

My father bought Jane Mansfield’s Lincoln.

It had been lent to her by the dealership to tour in for

the summer. This was the year before she died while on tour.

He had a radio phone installed in it. And it had a Mississippi

license since we were from the North.
